Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Kevin Keegan

Kevin Keegan of Donny

Kevin Keegan

Growing up in Armthorpe, supporting Doncaster Rovers, and never being spotted by them, never affected the remarkable sporting career of Kevin Keegan. His favourite Donny player was Willie Nimmo who inspired him to be a goalkeeper so much he emulated Willie's pre-match warm-up routines.

He bought his first pair of football boots from Ray Harrison's Sports Shop and played regularly between trees at Elmfield Park.

Coming from a Catholic family he attended St Francis Xavier Catholic Primary School in Balby and St. Peter's Catholic Primary School in Cantley.

His first job was as a clerk, but in his autobiography Kevin says it was more of a teaboy, at Pegler's Brass Works.

Setting Anfield, St. James Park and Wembley on fire as a player, and then much success as a manager of Newcastle, Fulham and England, this Doncaster boy is a living legend.

He lived in Armthorpe and Doncaster for a time in his formative years.

Kevin only ever played once at Belle Vue - when Liverpool visited for an FA Cup 3rd round replay, in 1974, on their way to the FA Cup final that year and the trophy. Kevin said to the Newcastle Evening Post later:

"Doncaster came to Anfield in the third round and drew 2-2 with us and to tell the truth they nearly put us out.

We went there for the replay during a power cut - it was the time when the games were played in the afternoon and we beat them.

Belle Vue, where I used to go and watch them, has gone, and they've done tremendously well."

He married his childhood sweetheart in Doncaster early on in his career at Anfield.
