Bilham Belvedere, in Doncaster, South Yorkshire

This Grade II listed 18th century summerhouse in a woodland copse north of Doncaster is one of Doncaster's architectural gems and surprises.

Today it's mainly ruins of Bilham Hall that once stood near here owned by William Nathan Wright Hewett, and designed by John Rawstorn.

Who Said That?

Edward Miller, in his bible "The History of Doncaster" (1804) says of the Belvedere: "WNW Hewett Esq., who has lately, at some distance from his mansion, erected an elegant small structure called Bel-vedere or Belle Vue which commands, perhaps, the most extensive, but certainly the richest prospect of any place in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The minsters of York, Lincoln (and sometimes Southwell) are distinctly seen, with nearly seventy parish churches".

It's in a remote woodland area, long forgotten and inaccessible.
