Steve Jackson played Barry in Clocking Off, but even though Barry, Mackintosh's night-time security guard, wasn't a main character in the first series of Clocking Off, Steve Jackson was attracted to him because he was so funny and gentle, a warmth Steve felt was shared by writers Paul Abbott and John Fay: "I think Paul and John really like Barry, and they both bring their own insight into the character. He's different to everyone else. He has no angst, he's not concerned about the things that bother other people. I mean, even his guard dog behaves like a Labrador puppy!"

Steve attended Town Moor Junior School and then Armthorpe Comprehensive in the Eighties. He briefly changed his name for a time to Steven Fury but eventually reverted back to his original name after being offered a few bit-parts.

On Coronation Street he first played the Stranger who was befriended by Mike Baldwin at a train station when a confused Mike went to track down his son Mark Redman in, of all places, Doncaster.

Then in January 2010, he began playing the more regular role of Trevor Dean; bin-man and lodger of Janice Battersby and then unlikely boyfriend of Carla Connor. He was axed by new producer Phil Collinson in May 2010 and left the series towards the end of the year, however the character was brought back for a week's stint in March 2011.

After Doncaster Steve trained at the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama. He starred as Michael Thompson in the award-winning BBC police series, The Cops, as well as appearing in television shows as diverse as Holby City, The Bill, EastEnders, Sweet Medicine, Heartbeat, Clocking Off, Doctors, Extras, Casualty and most recently, 32 Brinkburn Street.

He is a Sheffield Wednesday fan.
