Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Ernie Hart
Ernie Hart was born in Overseal on the 3rd January 1902, and played in the local Doncaster leagues as a youngster before signing a contract at the
start of the 1920 season with Leeds United.
He went on to become a Leeds legend, making 472 appearances during
his 16 years as a centre back. A skilful and tenacious defender who went
on to win 8 caps for England and known as one of the finest in the country.
Hart represented the Football League twice and was only sent off once in
his career.
Hart briefly went on to play for Mansfield, managed Tunbridge Wells FC, scouted for Coventry and Leeds before retiring.
When he retired he used his savings to buy a bus and started the Beehive Bus company which later became Wilfreda Beehive. Wilfreda bought out Beehive Services (E. A. Hart Limited trading as Beehive Services), then owned by the Barnsley Co-operative. This limited company now trades as Wilfreda Beehive.
Sadly Ernie died before his time in 1953.
Thanks to Gerald, Wilfreda Beehive and the Leeds Archive for this information.
