Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Effie Bancroft
Marie 'Effie' Wilton (and later in life, Lady Bancroft) (1840–1921) was a famous and influential English actress and theatre manager.
Bancroft was born in Doncaster, and was a child prodigy - appearing frequently onstage with her parents, who were both travelling actors. They toured the country constantly, and she eventually made her West End debut at just 16 in Macbeth.
She appeared onstage under the name Marie Wilton until after her marriage in December 1867 to Squire Bancroft. It was then she usually appeared with the name Lady Bancroft.
Bancroft and her husband were influential players in the developmant of Victorian-era theatre. They produceda series of increasingly innovative plays at the London theatres that they lived at and managed. They started at The Prince of Wales's Theatre and later the Haymarket Theatre.
