Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Thomas Howes

Thomas Howes Photo's

Thomas Howes is an English actor best known for playing William, the second footman in ITV's acclaimed Downton Abbey.

He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and played the role of Manchester United's captain Mark Jones in the 2011 TV film of the Munich air disaster, United.

On children's TV he played the role of Little Ralf in the BBC's ChuckleVision series The Mystery of Little-Under-Standing.

He has also performed on the stage in the roles of Dickie in The Winslow Boy (The Theatre Royal, Bath) and Scripps in The History Boys on the National Theatre's UK tour. He has regularly performed at Doncaster's Little Theatre with his company, 2Act.

On radio Thomas has played the role of Joseph Prado in Tulips in Winter.

Thomas was born in Doncaster to his parent's, both retired social workers. He grew up in Doncaster, and remarkably for his profession still lives here.

On the set of Downton Abbey multi-talented Thomas talked producer Jullian Fellowes into allowing him to provide background music in a number of scenes "I just started playing the piano one day on set and thought 'wouldn't it be fun if I could actually play in a scene', so Julian, the director and our producer thought it was a great idea to have William play background music in a scene where Thomas picks up Daisy and whirls her round the room."

"I am a real theatre animal and still have a great commitment to Doncaster, where I am from, and in particular the Am-Dram groups up there. There are loads of actors who leave home and turn their backs on where they're from and I think it's ludicrous. These places put you where you are and I'm living proof to any young actor from a small town that you can come from anywhere in the world and end up on telly if that is where you want to be – it is possible."
