Peel Airports has been given the go-ahead for an £80m scheme to develop a former RAF base in south Yorkshire into a commercial airport after an18-month public inquiry.

Doncaster Finningley Airport will be operational by the end of 2004, carrying around 2.3m passengers and 50,000 tonnes of freight by 2014.

Peel will spend £6m developing the airport on the 800-acre (324ha) site with an additional £20m spend on a 70-acre (28ha) business development park at the site.

It also emerged this week that Peel is to invest £20m in Teesside Airport.
