Doncaster News and Features: Vote for Donny singer Carla Wilks
Congratulations on your auditions and on reaching the showcase.
Q. Congrats - tell us about the audition - how did it go?
Like any audition, I was quite nervous but the judging panel looked friendly and didn't seem as brutal as the likes of Simon Cowell. We went in groups of five and performed up to 2 minutes of a song acapella. I was second out of my group to sing so I think that made me even more nervous. Once I got into my song I quite enjoyed the audition I sang 'People get ready' I picked it because it's not a typical audition song and I like being a bit different. The reason I applied for Open Mic Uk is because they said they never turn down talent, so it's nice they have given me and so many others the opportunity to show people what we can do without pre judging us on the usual factors other than vocal talent.
Q. Can you tell us about what you're going to do at the regional showcase on Sep 30?
At the regional showcase I get to compete against the other finalists from the South Yorkshire area, from the talent I've seen at the auditions it will be a great night full of local talent. There is going to be rappers, singer/songwriters and a whole mixture of vocalists. We get 3.30 to sing either one song or two songs within the time. I'm thinking of doing two songs, one song of my own and one by Rihanna. There will be industry judges, a live studio audience and a special guest performance. The winner of the Open Mic regional showcase gets the opportunity to compete against other regional finalists at Londonís 02 Arena.
Q. How can fans support our Doncaster girl in the regional showcase?
You can support me by coming down to the showcase on the 30th at Sheffield City hall and voting for me on the night. Tickets are only £8.00 which is fantastic as it will be a night filled with the best talent from South Yorkshire plus the special guest act. I think it will be a great night full of some amazing vocalists and songwriters.
You can get tickets from me Carlawilks@hotmail.com
You can also follow me at www.facebook.com/carla.wilks.73
Tickets can be bought on the night but its best to get them early to avoid disappointment.
I am also hoping to be out and about busking round Doncaster with the help of Doncaster council so check out my facebook to see where I will be.
Q. How long have you been singing?
I have always sung in school choirs from Park Primary up to Danum School Technology College then when I left school I joined the Sing Live Uk choir, then started to write music with other local musicians which led me on to learning music technology with Higher Rhythm recording studios in Doncaster.
Q. What are your favourite places in Donny?
Being a holistic animal healer and general animal nut, I love the Yorkshire wildlife park, I think itís a great attraction and they have done so much by helping other zoos and their animals by bringing them to Doncaster. Iím also proud of our minster; I used to sing in choirs at school and often got distracted looking round the minster rather than my song book.
