Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrian: Len White

Leonard Roy "Len" White was a former English professional Len White, Newcastle United goalscorerfootballer who played as a centre-forward, most notably for Newcastle United where he's currently the third highest goalscorer with 153 goals behind Jackie Milburn (200) and Alan Shearer (206).

Born in Skellow, north of Doncaster, White worked as a plate layer at Bullcroft Colliery. He started his career at Rotherham United and later joined Newcastle United in 1953 for a whopping £12,000 to accompany Jackie Milburn up front.

He won the FA Cup with Newcastle United in 1955 and he scored an incredible hat-trick inside eight minutes for the Football League representative side in 1958.

After Milburn retired in the late 1950s, White took over as Newcastle United's leading striker, continuing to improve his ratio of goals.

Paul Joannou writes in NUFC bible The Black 'n' White Alphabet: "He had terrific strength on the ball, weaving in and out of challenges at speed and was able to finish with a power-packed shot. White loved to attack defences on his own and he set the Gallowgate crowd roaring with many a spectacular goal."

He scored 28 in 33 First Division outings in 1960-61 before unfortunately breaking his leg at Spurs and, with their top scorer injured, United were eventually relegated that season.

He eventually left the club for Huddersfield Town in 1962 where he scored 37 times in 102 games. Later he joined Stockport County before retiring in 1965 to live in Huddersfield.

He was frequently referred to as the best uncapped centre forward of his generation.
