Doncaster Features: Famous Doncastrians: Dennis and Winston Rollins

Born in Birmingham in 1964 to Jamaican parents, Dennis Rollins cut his teeth after his family moved to Doncaster. At the age of 14 Dennis studied and performed with The Doncaster Youth Jazz Association.

After years of concentrated study Dennis moved to London where his unique approach to the Trombone was immediately and appreciatively recognised.

On Tuesday 19 February 2008, in a ceremony at Mansion House, Doncaster, Dennis Rollins was given the Honorary Freedom of the Borough in recognition of his successful musical career and for his role as an inspiration to Doncaster's musical youngsters.

Multi-award winning British jazz star, Dennis Rollins is well-known on the British and international jazz scene, celebrated for his versatility and unique approach to the underrated trombone. His mighty sound can be heard to full effect in his award winning band Badbone & Co’s repertoire of groove-based, funky dance music with jazz overtones. Badbone & Co won the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best Band last year, and Dennis picked up the Marston’s Pedigree British Jazz Award for Best Trombonist. Awards this year include best Trombonist of the Year at both the British Jazz Awards and the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards, plus nominations in the Urban Music Awards and the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

Over the years, Dennis, now based in Doncaster, has established a reputation as an artist of excellence and has lent his unique and stylish talents to some of this country's, and indeed the world's, top jazz and pop personalities such as Courtney Pine, Baba Maal, Jamiroquai, US3, Brand New Heavies and Blur.

Dennis Rollins' Badbone & Co has released three critically acclaimed albums: Badbone, Make Your Move, and last year’s Big Night Out! which is classic Dennis Rollins, but with extra funk.

His brother Winston followed the same prodigious path with his talent with the trombone.
