Doncaster News and Features: ROVERS STRIKER SIGNING NAMED

DONCASTER ROVERS WEB can exclusively reveal that Rovers have completed a deal to bring young Accrington Stanley striker Gary Williams to Belle Vue. Williams (20) becomes a Rovers player subject to a medical examination. A fee of 60,000 (A club record for Accrington) is involved, for a 2 and a half year deal. Accrington are also set to pocket 20% of any fee involved when the player is sold on by the Rovers.

The ex Ashton United striker attracted interest from Aberdeen, Charlton, Leicester, Walsall and Watford at the time of his move to Accrington at the start of this campaign, and has scored 24 goals in 24 games this season, 2 of which came in his farewell game, a 3-2 win vs Chorley in the FA trophy on
Saturday. Prolific scorer Williams also notched 4 goals against Leek Town in the 1st round of this seasons Trophy.

As a junior, Williams played in the same team in Burnley as current Rovers striker Ian Duerden, and after serving a YTS period at Oldham Athletic, the player moved to Conference rivals Morecambe, featuring in the first team a couple of times, before joining Ashton for whom he scored ten goals.

Rovers chairman John Ryan said of the young player: "This lad is one for the future, although our manager could well see him in his plans for this season."

Deputy chairman Peter Wetzel, who has been on several scouting missions this season, and has watched Williams a total of 5 times, added: "This boy has nerves of steel and finishes very clinically in front of goal. I feel he will go onto big things and hopefully that will be with us."

Manager Ian Snodin said of the player: "He's young and he needs a lot of work on him. He has the
same sort of pace as Andy Watson and he is a clinical finisher".

The signing brings to an end lots of speculation in recent weeks about the clubs/players and fees involved.
