Doncaster News and Features: KIRKWOOD HITS ONLY GOAL AS ROVERS BEAT SUTTON
Despite suffering from 'flu earlier this week, Glenn Kirkwood hit the only goal of the game to clinch Rovers their vital first win of the new year.
Goalkeeper Andy Warrington brilliantly denied Sutton the lead after only 4 minutes,
when he saved a penalty given away by Simon Marples.Kirkwood's goal came midway through the first half, after a Mike Newell flick on. The ex-Eastwood Town striker volleyed home in fine style from inside the area. Rovers were good for the lead in the first half, and Dave Penney continuing his return to form, was instrumental just behind the front two. The loss of defender Mark Atkins through injury early on was worrying for Rovers, but despite late possession and pressure from Sutton, and some shocking decisions from referee Hubbard, Rovers held out for the victory. New signing Neil Illman was given his competitive debut, replacing Kirkwood in the second half.
