Doncaster Features: What Is: Krav Maga Self Defence
Last month I started looking for something different to do in my spare time. I tried the usual suspects, yoga, pilates, spinning classes but they all felt a bit too tame or boring. I was fed up of the gym and all the big guys making me feel inferior. Then I came across Krav Maga, a self defence training seminar being held in Doncaster. I signed up straight away and headed to the seminar not quite knowing what to expect. The seminar was taken by 2 instructors from Transilvania who had just arrived in the North of England looking to teach self defence to everyone.
Krav Maga is Hebrew for Contact Combat. It is a proven system of close quarter self defence. Developed and originating from the Israeli Armed Forces this system has been tried and tested in many real life situations. Krav Maga is designed for street level attacks and assaults. Its’ various techniques have been developed to defend your self and others against hostile and violent actions and overcome and neutralize your assailant.
George started the class by warming up and then proceeded to show us a series of moves on how to get out of various head locks and arm holds. He was so quick it seemed as though we would never grasp the idea. But taking us through each move in sequence and repetition we soon grasped the idea and started to throw our partner to the floor and escape from the head lock. I was hooked. How many times have you seen someone in a bar being put into a side head lock, well on TV anyway, and thought it was impossible to get out of? Well let me tell you, my opponent went flying when I put the move into practice. I felt like David had just conquered Goliath all over again.
During the two hour seminar we have learnt how to defend ourselves against knife attacks, guns pointed at your head, attacks by sticks and bats, punches and kicks. Every class we go over what we have learned before and also learn new moves. Now I have never thrown a punch in my life but even I can escape from a hold and fight back against my attacker. I now feel very confident in my every day life and personally I feel better knowing if I was attacked in the street I would be able to defend myself and fight back.
You must be over 18 years old and all levels of fitness are welcome to come along and try out this easy to learn self defence class. They will teach you how to defend your self against attacks involving kicks and punches, chokes and grabs, sticks and bats, hand guns and knives. Learn the correct techniques to get out of holds and locks and feel confident when you are out and about. Compared to martial arts, Krav Maga is quick to learn and very efficient. Stay safe and keep fit at the same time!
Weekly classes are held every Friday at Cannons Gyms, Sidings Court White Rose Way, Doncaster, DN4 5NU.
