Bruce Woodcock of Donny

Bruce Woodcock

Bruce Woodcock, European, British & British Empire Champion 1945-50, was born in 1921 in Doncaster. In a thirty-nine fight career the former railwayman (Bruce worked in the Plant works) lost just four times and in the immediate post-war years was one of the pre-eminent fighters in Europe. Bruce retired from boxing and moved into the licensed trade, remembered along with his wife Norah, by many old regulars from the Tumbler, in Edlington.

William was the British Heavyweight Champion 1908-11, born Nov 6 1885 Mexborough.

Jon Jo Irwin

Denaby's Jon won The British Featherweight Title,(winning a Lonsdale belt outright),he also won the Commonwealth Title, won Intercontinental titles,and narrowly missed winning the European Featherweight title against former World champion Steve Robinson(many thought he had done enough to win). Chris Balderstone

Chris managed somehow to play football while also a strong bowler, batsmen and fielder for his county and his country. One of his 32 first-class hundreds made over two days included a league appearance for Doncaster Rovers. After retirement he joined the first-class umpires list, and officiated in two one-day internationals.

The PDC Embassy World Darts Champion of 1991, Dennis 'The Menace' Priestley was born and still lives in Mexborough.

The World Champion cyclist Tommy Simpson came from Harworth. He died tragically while competing in the Tour de France in 1967 slogging up Mont Ventoux.
